This is one for those who enjoy the less well known aspects of military history.

The memoir of a man who might have been just another infantry officer but for his actions that led pretty much to his being "pushed out" by politicians unhappy at his defiance of their appeasement policies and subsequent punitive attempts in 1971 to destroy one of Britain's finest regiments the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

It deals with his early years and enlistment at the end of WWII through the Korean War (@ Smitty here he served beside the US 187th before they became known as the Rakkasans) to Aden where "Argyll Law" restored order.

It is the story of a "proper officer" proudly serving his regiment and his ungrateful government.

You will only find it in 2nd hand stores or libraries but if you see it it is highly recommended

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature with no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
