    Good day all,
I finally got round to framing up this lovely portrait of a Lehr Geschwader Obergefreiter, and noticed a very feint pencil annotation on the reverse..
Most of it is pretty legible, but I’m having trouble with the word before the date..

    Thus far, I have: Menke, Obergefreiter / ???? , 42

I assume this to be the location, which could give me a clue as to his Geschwader or Staffel (with only four to choose from, I may be in with a chance)!

    Many thanks for your thoughts,
    Bob

    Hi there.

    Possibly Bremen?

    Thanks Willmore, nice suggestion..
That first character could be several things; R, P, a very florid L even. I hadn’t thought of B..

Of course, if it’s his home town and nowhere near where he was serving at the time, I’m stuffed.
    I shall have a furtle..
    Cheers!

I must confess, I’m having trouble finding Bremen in there..
    I’m thinking ‘Romanien’, but unsure..

It’s a tricky one for sure.

The reason I suggested Bremen is the ‘Sloppy flow’ of the script, but I’m still not sure to be honest. The first letter doesn’t look like a B should, but the rest sort of fits.

See if you can make any headway using this handy chart.
