Hey Guys i found this one and it seems that this Officier has a double cuff title.
Greg
Wow, what a picture Greg, very much 1945! I think that is a Volkssturm armbinde rather than two cuff titles though.
Hi Eddie it looks like SS Rank Insignia on his Tunic but i have my doubt that it would be Volkssturm cuff title...but you never know. I just noticed that there is no Eagle on his sleave either
Greg
Hi Greg, I didn't notice the lack of an Eagle on his sleeve, good eye! Here's a better pic of his sleeve and the Volkssturrmarmbinde :
Thank Eddie...you are Correct.
Greg
No problem Greg, it is a awesome pic, glad that you shared it with us! The Volkssturmarmbinde is one of my favorite pieces of insignia, so it jumps out at me. I'll have to find a good photo to contribute myself.
The dead Volkssturm officer is Walter Dönicke.
He was an NSDAP politician from Leipzig serving as a Volkssturm Battalion Commander (that's the rank collar patch) and committed suicide on 19 April 1945 at the Leipzig city hall following the entry of U.S. troops into Leipzig and the city's surrender.
HPL, thanks for the clarification, I always appreciate you knowledgeable input. I think I remember seeing the whole set of photos of the suicides in Leipzig, pretty disturbing, always makes me think of the scenes in Der Untergang of the people committing suicide rather than surrendering. Scary stuff.
I borrowed this from another thread so I could play too, SS man Heinz von Westernhagen with a Heer eagle on his sleeve:
Just for a laugh, I include this photo that I found recently, I'm pretty sure this was for some sort of play or something(look to the man at the far right), seems like the young man and his commanders had a good sense of humor, but I doubt they let him wear his Waffen-"Rock" in the field!
