It appears the left side of the street has been completely rebuit, the view today looks much wider.

I reckon the photographer in the original photo was stood over to the left thus giving us that impression. Regards Paul.

The street is Joan of Arc Street and ends in a large square in front of the cathedral.
It's again the perspective of the photo....
I have obtained an image in which it's clearly seen that there is a quite large square in front of the cathedral

It seems that photographs of the cathedral from Joan of Arc street were common.
I've found some for sale in a quick search.

The city of Orleans was unlucky enough to be heavily bombed in 1940 and 1944.
In 1940, by German long-range artillery and Luftwaffe bombers. And in 1944 by the allies air forces.

On the website of the municipal archives I have seen some sensational photographs of the destruction and reconstruction of the city after the war.
But, in short, this street and the cathedral did not suffer major damage. The following image allows us to verify that the destruction of that neighborhood of Orleans came close.

Thanks to Jeremiah for this thread as interesting "then and now" as others that he has shared with everyone.
