Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

I understand the picture was taken in Normandy, in the area to become known as the Falaise pocket. Perhaps it was victim to a rocket firing Typhoon?

I've just done a little research into the picture, the Stug III was knocked out during the strategic bomber raid of 25 July 1944 at the beginning of Operation Cobra, the US breakout from the Normandy bridgehead.
Dimas is correct about the trousers they are missing, I've seen another picture in the past taken from the other side! an undignified way to die.

Is this the photo you were thinking of Lucky?
These types of pictures were often posed, but i think this one could be real, the poor guys leg is completely shattered. What i would like to ask is, is this man a tanker? His uniform appears to me to say not. Could he have been a soldier hitching a ride?
Regards Ned.
