The Gothic script would seem to indicate early manufacture, so probably WW1 and it may be a powder charge container for a German field howitzer?
I could well be wrong, but it gets the conversation started .... nice score either way! ( Amazing that so much of the label still exists after the sea held it for so long. )

I think the only 88 used by the German army in WW1 was the 8.8 cm Flak 16, the 88mm was far more common with the Kaiserliche Marine. The Navy might be a good starting point for a search.
