I seem to remember my friend Scott (Bugme) here on the forum, referring to a cleaner called Goof off for removal of post war re-paint jobs. If he doesn't see this post and reply, drop him a PM and I am positive that he will be able to help you. I know he doesn't like the word "expert" as I don't either, but let's just say that he is highly proficient in matters of this nature.

You could try bead blasting. It is gentler than sand blasting.
