Size of Finnish M-1917 vs. Soviet M – 1916 helmet
Clawson states that the Soviet M-1916 can be distinguished from the Finnish M-1917 by the Soviet being 2 cm. longer than the Finnish. However, actual dimensions not given. Each of my three M-1916/17 helmets (pictured earlier) measure 28.5 cm., front to rear peak. Do these represent the larger (Izhora) or smaller (Sohlberg) version?

Karabanov’s book has the actual blueprints and shows Size 1 at 279mm, Size 2 at 288mm, and Size 3 at 300mm. I don’t see anything in the book showing a variation in length for different manufacturing facilities. Kevin

Thank you Kevin. That makes sense. Clawson must have been comparing a 279 and 300 mm helmets. When you have a small sample, things can go wrong. I clearly need another book.

You're welcome. While I still have Dr. Clawson's book and refer to it often, I believe Karabanov's book is a much better reference as it provides more detail, verified sources, and as mentioned above, actual blueprints of several models.

I have deleted this old link (2010) post because mixer believes that it will confuse readers. Point well taken. I like the history of ideas, but respect the position. Sorry folks.

Why are you reporting this collection of delusions from 2010? This link leads the situation to even more confusing. The book of Karabanov allows us to understand at least part of the unknown history of the SHLS ( ШЛС -"shovel steel"helmet).

Hello
He also mention that this is only a Soviet helmet, in conception and production even if two of the producing factories were in Finland, they were owned by russian entrepreneurs
