Soviet helmets stamp codes
Hello helmet specialists and collectors. I would like to ask for your help on Soviet helmet stamps. Beside the ones listed in M. Clawson book do you guys know any other helmet factory codes?
- CM3 : "Stalingradskiy Mashinostroitelniy Zavod"
- CT : "Stalingradskiy Traktorskiy"
- ЗКО : "Zavod Krasniy Oktyabr"
- ЧM3 : "Chelyabinskiy Mashinostritelniy Zavod"
- KM3 : "Kirovskiy Mashinostroitelniy Zavod"
- KoM3 : "Kovrovskiy Metallurgicheskiy Zavod"
- ЛM3 : "Lysvinskiy Metallicheskiy Zavod"
- TA3 : "Taganrogskiy Aviatsionniy Zavod"
- TБA3 : "Tbilisiskiy Aviatsionniy Zavod"
I have seen proofs of the following factory stamps used on WWII helmets : ЛM3, ЗКО and CT
Do you guys have any pictures of the other listed factory stamps?
Also did somebody ever heard about a "second" LMZ factory which should have been called "Lysma Metallurgicheskiy Zavod"? I have never heard about that one until recently. Somebody told me they were making helmets as well???
Last question, does anybody have in his collection a 1942, 1943 or 1944 ЛM3 stamped helmet?
Thanks for your help in advance!

Re: Soviet helmets stamp codes
Hello Ost-Berlin,
You have asked some very good and important question, unfortunetly i am unable to answer them for you.
But it would be nice in the future to have some kind of data base for reference regarding WWII Soviet Helmets and headgear.
Take care.

Re: Soviet helmets stamp codes
Just a couple of factories was made the helmets in quantity to supply Red Army.
ЗИ- Завод "Испытатель" "Ispytatel" factory, has made a quantity of experimental helmets in 1927-1937 years. A lot of early standard Ssch -36's has a stamp from that factory.
ЛM3 : "Lysvinskiy Metallurgicheskiy Zavod" or a factory nr 700. Was a bigger supplier of the steel helmets for Red Army. Known markings LMZ and L
ЗКО : "Zavod Krasniy Oktyabr" before the 1942 year was located in Stalingrad, after evacuation to Chelyabinsk, continued to work with similar name. Laboratory of that factory with it's director M.Kolosov, was work to research new types of the steel, and most of the helmets they made after 1942 year ( evacuation)was a experimental helmets
ЧM3 : "Chusovskoi Mashinostritelniy Zavod" a very rare producer of the helmets, only war time produced
СТ- I'am not sure about the Stalingradskiy traktorniy, as a helmet producer. A lot of factories who produced civil stuff before the war in war time era produced military equipment and weapons. The tractor factory after the war ( and the CT marked helmets are mostly post war produced,so, I would exclude this factory due of postwar helmets can not be made at the tractor factory) was made the similar products as thier name - tractors etc
And I absolutely not sure about the other factories as a producers of pre war/war time helmets.
I would say that at least a couple of other factories get an order for researching the steel for helmets
it's Nyitvenskiy metallurgicheskiy Zavod and Permskiy, exclude the ZKO,nr 700, and Chusovskoy

Re: Soviet helmets stamp codes
One cannot rule out small factory operations that may or may not have ever been part of any official record. I have seen several Ssh-40 examples that have non-standard features such as factory leather chin straps or liner pads in odd colors or material. Often these bare no markings at all.

That is is the Kirovsky zavod pieces, made in blockaded Leningrad, that factory re-make old, battlefied returned, scrap returned helmets and produce helmets MK1 like and Ssch39 in the very soft material ( you can bent it with the hand), for approx a 800 meters from a factory - the frontline
The supply with uniforms, kit and weapons was blocked for 871 day. Only limited quantity of foods weapons and ammo was sent over the "Road of Life", due of thatm the uniforms was triple time second hand, local made, and also Imperial Russian uniforms used from the stocks, must of the peoples, newer get the uniforms ( Men from Opolchenie) and die in their civil wear in the trench lines...forgotten heroes

Re: Soviet helmets stamp codes
Ok, so it's the first time I heard about this maker mark "Lysva". I guess it's something different than "Lysvinskiy". Thanks again for your help Dimas.
