Default Eagle - authentic or fake?

My great uncle fought for the US in WWII and came home with this eagle which he liberated from a soldier he had killed....

I've always assumed it was a sleeve eagle, but know nothing else about it.

It appears to be hand stitched using wire or a metallic like thread. No marks of any kind are on the reverse side.
Can anyone give me any information about it?

Thanks Casey - I'd have a hard time believing it wasn't real as it was given to my father by his uncle around 1947 or so when my father was 12 years old. Were fakes being made then or are they a more recent thing?

My father gave this to me around 1975 and I have had it in my possession ever since. So the chain of custody on the piece is fairly well known.

The Great Uncle had many pieces in his collection - I remember seeing them when I was a kid. Neither my father nor I have any idea where his collection went after the uncle's death in 1972.

It is a good original Heer (Army) Officers quality breast eagle.

    Cheers, Ade.

Great news, Ade - thanks very much for your appraisal.
Good to know it's a breast rather than sleeve eagle as well.

    Thanks very much!!!!

    My pleasure.

It could be worn on the field service uniforum or on the parade uniform. It was also allowed to be worn by some senior NCO's.

    Cheers, Ade.

Crap - now I'm hooked. I've been looking at this site for about 10 of the past 24 hours. Need to get my own collection going!
