Hi
Were officers and officials required to wear shoulder rank insignia on their leather greatcoats or was it personal choice?
Many thanks

Hi Goober, I would say that rank would have needed to be displayed. But I cannot confirm if this was mandatory.
Cheers, Ade.
Thanks for that info Ade.

Hello,
It was mandatory to wear shoulderboards on the leather coat, as on the greatcoat, the rubberized coat...or any coat that has provision for shoulderboards. And for those that had no provision (in theory), the army adopted a special range of rectangular arm insignia with a system of leaves and bars in green/black colors.
one can imagine that more than one german officers did wear his greatcoat or leather coat without shoulderboards while on the front line, but so many things were done...
Thanks

I've seen many pictures showing them both with and without rank insignia on them. One sgned pic I have is of Heinrich Springer-and he is wearing a leather greatcoat with out any insignia on them.
