    Judging by the Gefreiter in the foreground with his gaiters and mountain boots, I would say some sort of mountain unit, but that is just a guess.

    That might also explain the caps , early Bergmutze caps.

    I agree with thecyclists theory, because they are also where Bergmutze mountain caps.

    *edit, I wrote is before seeing CBHs comment, he is spot on.

    These will be a heavily modified Austrian button-cover tunic with re-sewn top pockets and collar, added plus pocket buttons and reich insignias in my opinion...or modified reichswehr tunic maybe?
