The city had, not one, but two Orthodox cathedrals, on both banks of the Lopan River. The Cathedral of the Annunciation, in neo-Byzantine style; and the Dormition Cathedral (late Baroque style and with its neoclassical bell tower).

The German counterattack that allowed the city to be captured again was a masterpiece of the great von Manstein. It allowed to limit the damages of the disaster of Stalingrad and to elevate the moral and optimism to the Wehrmacht, until the definitive defeat of that summer in the Ostfront: Operation Zitadelle.

The truth is that after the defeat of July 1943 in Kursk, the Soviet counteroffensive eventually threw the Wehrmacht to the west bank of the Dnieper, liberating the cities of Belgorod and Kharkov, after the fourth battle of Kharkov.
It was the end of an occupation that lasted almost two years.
