    Default Luft Officer Research Question

    Gentlemen,

I'm researching a Luftwaffe officer and have hit a bit of a snag. The blade on the 2nd model Luft dagger reads " Meinen Sohne zur Beförderung von seinem Vater 25.2.41". The reverse ricasso has the surname "Knop".

I've managed to isolate 5 Luft officers with the surname that could potentially be the original owner but I suppose there's always the possibility there could be others. With the promotions listed, none match up with the one referenced on the blade of 2.25.41.

    - Georg Knop, a medical doctor, (WBK Hannover II) 1.9.42 Asst. Arzt (Z), promoted to Oberarzt (Z) (Kn. O./San.) (RDA 1.1.42) 1.8.43 promoted to Stabsarzt (Zahrarzt) (Kr. O./San.)

    - Hans-Jochen Knop, (DOB 17.10.13, Stolpen) 24.11.37 Lt. at FFS C Celle (later FFS C 7) 1.8.39 promoted to Oblt in II/ZG 76, 15.5.40 Oblt in 6 ZG 76, POW - BF 110 C, captured in the vicinity of Montcornet a/f after combat with RAF 73 Sqdn Hurricanes in vicinity of Roizy. (Version #2, shot down by Hurricane, belly-landed in the vicinity of Attigny, west of Rethel. Returned after armistice. 15.8.40 Oblt, Stab/ZG 76 KIA - Bf110C, shot down by fighters while escorting Ju88s of LG1 over English Channel near the Isle of Wight. (Version #2, shot down over North Sea by Hurricanes) 1.8.44 officially listed as MIA, credited with 2 victories.

    - Hermann Knop, (DOB 26.4.17 in (Hessels) 22.2.43 Lt. (Kr.O.) Stabe des Lufttransportführers beim Generalquartiermeister, transferred to IV/KG 2, 26.3.43 Lt, 12/KG 2 KIA Do 17 Z-1 (US + SW), crashed about 2 km west of Villaroche. Buried at Champigny St. Andre

    - Kurt Knop, (W.B.K. Stettin 1), 1.8.43 promoted to Hptm (Kr.O./Flak)

    - Rudolf Knop, (W.B.K. Zwickau), 1.9.43 promoted to Oblt (d.R.z. V./Fl.)(RDA 1.3.27)

Any help in identifying the original owner is most appreciated.

Reverse blade, you can make out the surname "Knop" on the ricasso.

I'm afraid with there being other possible examples that you haven't been able to locate this could well be an impossible task. If the dates of promotion don't match to the ones you have located then that pretty much rules them all out and does the date mean the actual promotion date or just the date it was presented?

Thanks for the thoughts. There is absolutely the possibility of finding additional names of Luftwaffe personnel with the name Knop. In fact someone pointed me in the direction of a Gerhard Knop from 4//5G 102 but I can rule him out as his rank was listed as Gefrieter and the dagger in question was worn only by officers.

Hans-Jochen can also be eliminated as he was killed in action in 1940 which predates the blade dedication. With the info I have so far, that leaves Hermann, Kurt, Rudolf and Georg.

The word used is "beförderung" which I translate as promotion, colloquially perhaps it has other meanings? With the scant info I've found on the above listed men, there was no promotion date listed for 1941. I'm thinking it possible that promotion could also mean graduation from officer candidate school or flight school but it's just supposition at this point. At least I have a specific date which I'm hoping with eventually line up with someone. Even if the guy turns out to be a paper pusher, just identifying the owner would be a great victory.
