Agreed. Some Euro countries we ship to work off the barcode generated this end, with no human input. Others will lay out on a bench in front of you all the things you are importing and check them off the invoice to make sure you are paying your dues, and not fudging the numbers! It keeps people off the dole I suppose.

I'm sure this Law will make Germany safe from the Rightwing.

Sad, this law seem a little Orwellian to me.

Also people always want what they can't have, so I'm sure this will just push TR collecting into the Blackmarket.
well said this is so stupid ... yes I collect and yes i am german but wait I work and deal with many foreign ppl including jews ( and suprise i like them ) ... like there are no other important things to deal with in this country for the government...

Yeah... I'm sure this will fix what we saw in Hamburg a week ago or that other very specific prevalent issue making its rounds in Europe today--- this appears to be nothing but symbol politics. If right wing extremism is a real issue in Germany they should focus on those actually causing the problem, the perpetrators of actual crimes, not impose Orwellian laws that practically seek to make certain parts of history illegal that only affect conscientious law abiding collectors. No matter how much they make illegal, tear down or censor they will never get rid of history---

You'd think the lawmakers would have much more prominent things on their minds than the ghosts of the past, but it seems not. At the end of the day, an inanimate object does not have an ideology. It may represent one, but this should only be a concern if said artifacts is used for the explicit purpose of fomenting hateful ideals.

But as ever, there's very little thinking involved in politics. More senseless political correctness in place of logical and reasoned thought. Such is the world we live in today.

The German Government is quite sensitive to the horrors that their previous government imposed on so many. They do not look at these artifacts as collectable pieces of history. They are a symbol of a past Germany will always have to live with. I certainly can understand the sensitivity expecially with a growing far right movement in the European Union over the overflow om immigrants they have taken in.

It's a shame, and quite disturbing, to see people so willing to lurch back towards an ideology that unleashed such horrors upon the world. Especially in Germany where, as you say, you'd think people would be particularly aware of the past.

Even more important, then, that these artefacts should be used to educate and warn.

Reminds me of a quote often attributed to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: 'We learn from history that we do not learn from history.'

In my opinion, the old film and photographs no longer relate the shock or reality of what occurred. Today people are overly influenced by the violence of commercial film, tv and video games. In their minds it all becomes the same fantasy. As historians, it is our duty to keep the reality alive for future generations.

Very well said, indeed. The legal tradition in Central Europe varies from that in the Anglo Saxon world.

The digital space is especially prominent in recycling hatred and symbolism of violence, which particularly appeals to young people who either are too ignorant to understand or, themselves, all too eager to partake of a revised form of such mass hatred and violence.

Our website is devoted to the study of regalia while upholding the civil rights that form the basis of the freedom, security and prosperity that make such collections and collectors possible. I believe very much that militaria promotes the study of history, but there are others who fetishize these objects as symbols of hate and violence. The latter
category of persons makes more trouble for us here than do the purveyors of fakes and so forth.

They have no place here. It is not as if they do not have ten thousand or a hundred thousand websites for their dross. The German and other continental European governments treat this issue in a manner than shocks especially US Americans, but such shock is somehow merely a reflection of how little certain persons understand politics, society, culture and so forth in central Europe.

Personally, I draw a distinction between an historical artifact and the collector, on the one hand, and repugnant political movements, on the other---but many do not, and that's just a fact. Decrying this fact bespeaks an attitude that is sometimes wholly innocent and at times wholly suspect.

Those who come here to advance their racist and hate laden agenda are swiftly booted out by the authorities.

Those who read this who are uninformed about contemporary European politics, as well as the events that led to the victory of national socialism in Germany
or its allied movements elsewhere in continental Europe would better spend their time learning something of this history of merit versus salivating over SS cap badges
or whatever masquerades for "historical" interest, but is just veiled ideology....and today is a prelude to violence.

I teach and research history at an advanced level for a living, and am very much a witness to the revival in continental Europe and in the USA of core ideas of national socialism which are now wrapped in a hipster and urban chic cover and so forth. These repugnant ideas never change and are hardly so subtle as to defy easy and swift recognition.
