Yes, as I mentioned in #10 in this thread
Yes indeed. I didn't read past the post I was commenting on.

Being in Austria, no doubt you know this, but non or limited-German speakers can look up words in a dictionary and still be confused if they don't have a feel for language usage in the German military. Aka, German military terminology.

Despite having taken a course in college entitled "Military and Scientific German" and having served as the liaison officer to a Bundeswehr Division HQ for a little over a year, I still refer to this volume from time to time:

No doubt the opposite can be true as well: A native German speaker, even with good knowledge of everyday English, may be taxed when trying to decipher U.S. Military terminology. Heck, even civilians in the U.S. can get lost in a conversation between military guys, especially when slang and acronyms start to be thrown around.

Thanks Mark, but I had zero doubt about the meaning of Verletzung or it's related verb since I speak/read/write German fairly fluently. The question was what the abbreviation "Verl." meant.

Yep, I know Todd. Not teaching you to suck eggs just confirming for others the meaning of "verl" and explaining the word

Not in this case. In "Wehrmachtsprache" Nachrichten meant signals aka. communications.
Yep, as I mentioned above I forgot about "communications" ie Signals. We don't get too many really sunny days here and today was a day for cold beer but it is a problematic word isn't it?

For sure. Esp. because it does have other usages in "civilian" German. Had I expressed my earlier post better, I may have written that various countries militaries are "societies within societies" with their own language, sub-culture, and customs.

Thanks so much guys. I can see how a "translation" from the internet can cause the right word being used wrong! Thanks again and will keep research this guy and his family.
Sorry about the confusion on my earlier post, was not aware that news and message were the same word but different meanings!
