    G'day All,
I've had this Australian Tunic for a long time and have only just started digging up on the fella! His service number written in on the tunic tag VX16839 GJ Gillard doesn't match up with the National Archives of Australia record! but does come up with VX18689!
So now it brings me to my question. May please I ask for opinions on this? - is the "Gillard" written on the tunic comparing to the NAA record done by the same person?

I'm seeing what you are seeing, But its know my eye sight ***** now
Even with my glasses, Could it be a typographical error on the record card?

Does the VX mean something? Noticed on the card it has VX and his tag just has the V??

And what does it mean on the card: Other Names ?????

Yep - note the 8, A & R they are similar. Between the doc and tunic period the fella saw action in Africa. Any way it is strange.

I thought the forms were filled out by the attestation officer? You can soon prove this by examining the forms one-up or one-down from 18689.

He was a grocer around the Eastern Suburbs before retiring to Cowes where he passed away in 2008.

There is only one other G.J. Gillard on the Roll, and he was a PTE from NSW. So looks like the tunic was Garnet's in my opinion.

I agree that the name on he card could have been written by a clerk. I agree with Phil as to the possibility of a typo with his service number, I hope this is your guy.
