This question comes up quite often. A lot of the time family members do not want or are not interested in these kinds of things and sell them and this is where we as collectors come in and save this history from being lost or destroyed. In the case of German documents, I have heard many stories where families will actually destroy any paper work and sell medals because they do not want to be connected to the past. It could also be the case that there are no living relatives and this is why items end up in private collections.
