    Default Latest HJ Buckle Additions

Hi, all. Been a little while since I've posted any new buckles and wanted to share my latest HJ pick-ups from our good forum friend and HJ specialist, Chad

First and second are two solid nickel buckles with double maker marks for Assmann & Overhoff u Cie.

Third is an earlier solid nickel marked M 4/23 for Dr. Franke & Co. and with the distinctive eagle that is seen with this maker and also from Berg & Nolte.

Fourth, another early solid nickel marked PS RZM KH 13 for Paul Schuhmacher, Ludenscheid.

Fifth and last (but certainly not least), a plated steel HJ marked M 4/13 also for Paul Schuhmacher and with the uncommon placement of the marking under the pin shroud.

Very happy with these new pieces and hope you like them!

    Best,
    Adam

Some very nice buckles, the Assmann/Overhoff buckle is indeed quite unusual!

Wonderful HJ buckles Adam, one and all.

I must admit though that I am very impressed with the final HJ buckle which displays the M4/13 mark for Paul Schumacher, Lüdenscheid. In my opinion, very rare too, as I think that under pin shroud marks on HJ buckles are very seldom seen.

So, the obvious questions. Why should a HJ buckle have 2 makers logos - Assmann and Overhoff ? Who made the buckle - Assmann or Overhoff ? Perhaps one company manufactured and the other company bought from and then, distributed ? Perhaps Overhoff manufactured the Assmann design under licence ? Why did not one, buff out the others logo and markings ? Was there a joint venture between Assmann and Overhoff ? Many questions about these dual makers name HJ's and also, other questions about the possible almost exclusivity of design and manufacture that Assmann enjoyed in the very early days of this quite iconic buckle.

    Regards,

    David

Hi, guys and thanks for the replies. Thank you, David for posing the obvious yet perplexing question. I had been considering this myself but forgot to ask and have not yet picked Chad's brain on the matter.

Unfortunately I don't think I can conjecture much beyond the speculations you have already made. That being said, and perhaps I am mistaken, but it does seem to my novice eyes that the first double maker marked HJ is an eagle design associated with Assmann.

The second buckle on the other hand appears to have the same eagle design and also the larger/coarser pebbling on the roundel as does this HJ that I have attached a photo of and which is marked RZM M4/27 for Overhoff only. Does this suggest to anyone else then that the second buckle would have originally been manufactured by Overhoff and then subsequently marked by Assmann for some reason (and vice versa for buckle #1)?

The speculation you make about a joint venture of some kind is very interesting, David and seems quite plausible especially given that the other's mark was not buffed out, thus giving dual credit.

It is indeed enigmatic, yet it seems clear there was a very close relationship of some kind here between these two manufacturers. Perhaps Chad and others will be able to weigh in and offer their thoughts on this interesting issue of double maker marks
