I guess it is possible it was painted for War time use. I have owned a couple dozen brass Imperial buckles and none of them had any sign of paint.

Thanks Kirby. I searched the net for it but couldn’t really find any information on it. Of course it could have been painted personally by the wearer. We’ll probably never know.

A collector named Allan is my go to guy on Imperial buckles. He checks in on this forum and he can probably let us know what’s on your buckle.

An 1895 model buckle which could have seen service during the Great War, until such time as being replaced (or not replaced) by the grey painted steel, 1915 model.
If worn on active service, it seems quite sensible and for obvious reasons, to subdue that shiny and bright nickle silver roundel.
