    Default German ww1 fieldmutze/kratchen

As a collector of steel helmets, the soft headgear has not my first interest. Nevertheless some iconic items that made part of the daily life of german and allied soldiers can certainly find a place in my collection. I guess this is a prussian infanterist fieldcap with moth damage and if I am right the upper cockarde has been colored (red). The seller asks 320 euro.

This is what would be called a "tellermütze" rather than a kratzchen - it is a privately purchased cap for walking out, rather than field use. The cockades are correct - the top is the red/white/black of the German Empire, and the lower is the black/white of the state, in this case Prussia. It does not appear to be repainted and the red being on the more orange side of the scale like this is one way to spot originals.
Overall the cap appears legit to the period.

But that said, there is a lot to be said for condition where cloth is concerned. 320 Euro seems high (to me) for the level of moth damage on this one, especially as it is not a regimentally marked field cap. An expensive option for sure, but a good example of what the field cap would look like is: Regimentals | IMPERIAL GERMAN FELDMUTZE. Just my $0.02!

Not much more to add. Yes, it's a tellermutze with a beautiful high quality wool. Unfortunately, the moths realized this too.

Also agree with Septhes on the cost issue. But I do think it would be difficult to find another like this. They are out there, but I don't see them come up for sale often.

A picture from the book '1914-1918 door Duitse ogen', a book full of authentic photographes from this period in Flandres, where I live. The pictures shows soldiers looking at the corps of a dead pilot after the plane has been shot out of the air. Some are looking at his documents ? I think seeing at least two soldiers wearing the 'tellermütze' (at the right) in the picture at the bottom.

interesting subtitle on this postcard where a German doctor pulls out a rotten tooth of a women in 1916 in the village of Vladslo in Flanders (near where I live) : "helpfulness of the 'barbarians' in Flanders".
