On top are the wearer's rank (Gefreiter), name, place of birth (Hayingen/Lothringen [Lorraine]) and date of birth.
The unit is the 5. Landsturm-Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon "Saarbrücken", 3rd company.
I cannot comment on authenticity.
THANK YOU! Hadn't occured to me that it might be a reproduction. If anyone can yea or nay on authenticity it would be appreciated!
The fakers are making excellent reproductions these days. Most are coming from the former Eastern Block countries, but they have others selling their wares from Germany and the UK. You have to know your source.
WOW! I'd hope for better! How do the 'sources' tell?!
In my opinion a nice and original erkennungsmarke. There are no red flags regarding the stamping and the emarke itself. The unit designation is also correct and it was part of XXI Armee-Korps Saarbrücken.
Edit: the cord is also correct for the period.
Here is some info I found:

Thank you !
I was not saying the piece is a reproduction at all. I was just explaining the current situation regarding German Erkennungsmarke in general. I agree that this example is just fine. By source, I meant that you should use a reputable dealer or knowledgeable collector, i.e., someone you trust.
I have to add that fakers do their research too and usually have their unit facts correct. Like Dschop, they can look them up on the Internet. It's no absolute indication that a piece is good, but is just one aspect to check.
