On top are the wearer's rank (Gefreiter), name, place of birth (Hayingen/Lothringen [Lorraine]) and date of birth.

The unit is the 5. Landsturm-Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon "Saarbrücken", 3rd company.

    I cannot comment on authenticity.

The fakers are making excellent reproductions these days. Most are coming from the former Eastern Block countries, but they have others selling their wares from Germany and the UK. You have to know your source.

In my opinion a nice and original erkennungsmarke. There are no red flags regarding the stamping and the emarke itself. The unit designation is also correct and it was part of XXI Armee-Korps Saarbrücken.
Edit: the cord is also correct for the period.

Here is some info I found:

    Landsturm XXI. Armee-Korps / Saarbrücken
    Ldst.IR 48 Landsturm-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 48
    XXI.1 – 1.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Saarbrücken
    XXI.2 – 2.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Saarbrücken
    XXI.3 – 3.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Saarbrücken
    XXI.4 – 4.Landsturm-Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon Saarbrücken
    XXI.5 – 5.Landsturm-Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon Saarbrücken
    XXI.6 – 1.Landsturm-Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon Saargemünd
    XXI.7 – Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon St.Wendel
    XXI.8 – Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Bad Kreuznach
    XXI.9 – Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Forbach
    XXI.10 – 1.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Bitsch
    XXI.11 – 2.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Bitsch
    XXI.12 – 1.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Hagenau
    XXI.13 – 2.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Hagenau
    XXI.14 – 6.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Saarbrücken

    XXI.18 – 9.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Saarbrücken

I was not saying the piece is a reproduction at all. I was just explaining the current situation regarding German Erkennungsmarke in general. I agree that this example is just fine. By source, I meant that you should use a reputable dealer or knowledgeable collector, i.e., someone you trust.

I have to add that fakers do their research too and usually have their unit facts correct. Like Dschop, they can look them up on the Internet. It's no absolute indication that a piece is good, but is just one aspect to check.

I understand and greatly appreciate the input. I agree about finding trusted sources, but individual knowledge to me is most important. This piece, for example, came to me as part of an edged weapons collection and I prefer to use it to help learn about traits for originals...and fakes!
