    Default My Crazy Uncle

My uncle, Major Dr. Albrecht Ochs, scored a victory in 1918 over a Sopwith Camel, for which he was awarded the Honour Goblet. He scored four more victories in 1940 whilst flying with JG3, latterly as temporary CO of the III. Gruppe in September, 1940, when Wilhelm Balthasar was wounded. He died in 1986 and I was lucky to get some of his relics. Unfortunately the Ehrenpokal he was awarded in October, 1940 was lost in the war, but other material survived. The tunic and hat are not his, but the medals are, although the medal bar is my attempt at a recreation.

    Great stuff. Fantastic history.

While I've never focused on it. I'm sure it was very rare to have a WW1 Pilot also actively fly and fight in WW2.

Thanks for the interest. The reason I call him crazy is that he bluffed his way into the Air Service by fudging his eye exam, as he was legally blind in one eye from a childhood ailment. He was also a mental case about germs and used to clean the cutlery before eating, and regularly travelled with a huge assortment of pills. He was a lawyer in civilian life, and had also been a judge at the Volksgericht, although I think this was before the war, as he didn't have much time during the conflict, judging from his log books. I wish I could find his goblet from 1940, this would be the icing on the cake. The decorations that survived were the ones he sent to his sister for safe keeping while he was locked up for 'denazification' from 1945-46.

You are very fortunate to now be the latest custodian of your late Uncles history. Lucky that this much has survived. Thanks for posting.
