    Croix de Guerre, it is indeed a Prussian Imperial German Army drum hanger a 'Trommelschere', looks to be post 1916 metal type, as pre-early war were usually brass, the drum was securly held to the drummer with a broad strap over the shoulder (when on manouvres), the 'Trommelriemen'. Yours was worn at the front of the belt and drum clipped onto it, it acted as a steady/positioner, according to the drummers preference.The design differed according to the state the regiment was from. They were still in use after the Great war throughout the interwar period and beyond. A pair of drumsticks, 'Trommelstocke' were also carried in a small holster, 'Trommelstocktasch' on the belt. You can see all the items mentioned on the photo below.

    Oradour, thank you very much for taking the time to post this information! I sincerly appreciate it. It came in the footlocker group of an American named fred Kurth that served in the American Field Service before joining the US Army and the Reserve Mallet. (I have posted his group on this forum).
