Default Prussian Pilot Badge WW1 - Unmarked - Clique Style

After a failed attempt to purchase an 1870's EK2 (and thanks to Greg all the help), I stumbled across this. This has been on my wish list for a long time. Very hard to find original examples and highly faked.

They come in many variations. This is the more common, and less expensive but still desirable Clique style (stamped). Other styles are the two piece hollow and "massive" style. Some believe the Clique style were the "issued" versions, where the more fancy Two Piece examples were private purchase. I do not know if this is true or not.

This example is unmarked but believed, by some, to be produced by Deumer. These were produced war time and post war.

There is a known die flaw in the right arch of the Prussian crown. Base metal is brass or a tombak material with some of the original silver frosting remaining on the obverse, and most on the reverse.

Overall condition is good with honest wear.

Post purchase, during my research, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that is award is actually published. It is on page 31 of Robert Pandis' "Imperial German Flight Badges Volume 1".

Congratulations on the badge! Not saying an 1870 EK2 is nothing, but I wouldn't feel too bad missing out on one and getting one of these instead. The pilot badge is really cool I always found the design of it really unique as its just a picture of an early plane flying over a small rural town, if I didn't know about them I'd have thought it was a civilian award. The Austrian pilot badges are also really nice too.

    Thanks guys. Appreciate the comments.

The photos are ok. But not very good. I will try to take some better ones. The white background washes out the award a bit.

That's a really nice piece, Michael. It's exactly what I would expect a
worn, issue badge to look like. Plus it is a big bonus known that it's been
vetted by two well known aviation experts. (Pandis & Ferg).------------
----and how cool is it to be able to open up a book and point to your badge.

    Congrats my friend.

Thanks Greg. Ferg got back to me and remembered owning this and Pandis photographing it for his book. So, yes! It's been "fully vetted"

Just my gut, but I too feel that this is probably an awarded example versus a later private purchase example. We will never know, but a few similar examples of this die type that I have seen that are reported to be from the 30's are all stamped steel and with a more shiny silver wash (not frosted). Either way, who ever owned this, certainly wore it on a uniform.

Perhaps just a challenging piece to photograph.

Yes, it's not an easy one for sure....but with the second set, while better, I didn't set up the lighting well and just rushed with the macro lens. The silver frosting on the reverse washes out a lot of the details if the lighting isn't perfect. Add to that, this lens takes a lot of patience to get the depth of field just right as well.
