The Ottoman medal called the Harp Madalyası had many other names such as Stern von Gallipoli (Gallipoli Star), Türkischer Halbmond (Turkish Crescent), Eiserner Halbmond (Iron Crescent), and the Ottoman War Medal. It was instituted by Sultan Mehmed V on 1 March 1915 for gallantry in battle. Germans, Ottomans, and Austro-Hungarians alike were awarded this medal by the Ottoman government.

This thread is the compilation of the names, faces, and stories of Germans, Austro-Hungarians, and Ottomans that were awarded the medal. An unknown amount of these medals were awarded to the brave fighting in the far east.

It is the result of only the past two months of research so it is still in-progress. Hopefully the list of recipients continues to grow, and the information can be used for other reseatch.

Göring never served beyond the western front although he was awarded the Türkischer Halbmond as did other personalities. He may have been awarded this in Berlin while working with the Turkish military attache there.

Born 25 April 1892 in Augsburg
Died 28 January 1969 in Munich

Jakob Grimminger, a member of the NSDAP and the SS, was famously known as the standard-bearer of the Blutfahne. Stained with the blood of fallen martyrs at the 1923 Munich Putsch in which he carried until the late days of the war in 1945. He enlisted in the Great War at 16-years-old serving as an air mechanic until 1917. He was in the Gallipoli campaign and spent a year in the Holy Land before being discharged. He continued to wear the Eiserner Halbmond beneath the breast chord on his black M32.
