A co-worker of 20 years has asked me if I can identify the uniform/rank of his great grandfather.

His grandfather is the youngest boy to the left.

He has little information even on his grandfather but knows he was born in 1902.
thinking it puts this pic just before WW1

    any info would be great.

    regards

thanks gents. I was looking for a couple of hours last night and I was thinking Bavarian..

Now that Austro/Hungarian has been mentioned I will do more research.. I cant find any pics from either with the same collar, the way it overlaps.

My co-worker is convinced his Great grandfather is German

    regards Mike

I'm not aware of any German military uniform with stars on the collar, that's not to say that maybe before unification some states may have had them. Maybe Saxony or Württemberg (although Württemberg should have piping on it) would be my two closes guess. Things change quickly as far as uniforms go, among the German states during the 1870's and 1880's. Given that this fellow is wearing an Überrock doesn't help. If it wasn't for the collar the cut of the rest of the uniform does appear German (including the shoulder boards). It may not be military. Good luck.
