A scarce saber (Shashka) this is a nice one. They also come with mountings for the bayonet, and this example looks like it probably had some field repair that is occasionally seen. Best Regards, Fred

So many fakes, but I like the look of this one.

Sabre is ok, looks like period, some problem is with ball fittings on end of scabbard, possible there is some replacement and i assume there should be normally 2 rings. Or there is additional leather cover over old leather of scabbard.

    Hello Andy,
That model is a one ring version for officers ... no bayonet here ...
Here it is along with its Dragoon twin ...Note the alike markings...
Only one year difference in manufacturing .
    Regards
    K.

Nice grouping. From what I remember, the government models without bayonets were for the non-commissioned officers who carried revolvers (or pistols) instead of rifles. And sometimes what I originally believed were Dragoon models turned out to be for the horse mounted artillery. Best Regards, Fred

Yes the one ring is correct on Cosack Schaschka M1881 for man, this is mostly not for NCO but for ordinery Cosack for this speaks the leather remains of portepee. Normally the scabbard was not cover with additional leather so i assume here was a heavy duty on horse, and the the new cover secured the scabbard body for damage. Anyway there has it ended by different shape as are the origin fittings.
