Hello Doug,
I believe you are correct, or at least very close and it is a silver.
Nice find!

Hello Doug
Nice Find!
You are correct, this one is attributed to the firm of Ernst L Müller, Pforzheim and referred to as the oval hinge variant.
I also agree that this one is an unmarked 1st Pattern due to the hardware set up.
As we see here, the hinge base fits precisely inside the oval shaped raised guide lines on the reverse of the badge.
The reverse die was constructed to take this particular hardware set up.
With the wreath broken, it is fortunate the hardware is still intact.
The wreath looks to have been cut; is this what you see?

Also...silver grade for me as well.

Thank you all for your comments. I am sure it is a silver but there is just a hint of bronze in the low relief areas but I am guessing that this is just a discolouration of the original lacquer.
Fischer, I am not too sure about the wreath being cut in close up under a glass it looks like a break. There is no evidence of any cut marks.
I guess I will never be able to confirm how the damage occured.
It is just an odd example for me to have in my collection. It will be doomed to spending the next couple of years in a box.
So on to the next hunt...
All the best

Michael........you just don't understand.
It is all about the hunt for me.
For example:
I am not an edged weapon collector, but items just accumulate and there is just not enough space at home to keep the stuff on display.
I ended up having to stick up the bayonets and other pieces of steel that had been gifted and picked up for pennies over the years in my office.
See the picture below..You may well understand my dilemma.
All the best
