Her is a fairly rare badge which is often overlooked by collectors who just don't look close enough and mistake it for the later version.

It is rare (usually 2 - 3 times the value) because it was only in use for less than a year in 1924.

In 1924 the Tank Corps was granted the title "Royal" and the motto "Fear Naught" (the title Royal Tank Regiment did not appear until 1939) and it was incorporation of the motto which resulted in the new badge which was made in white metal rather than the brass of the 1917 original.

The design had the tank facing left to right as viewed just as the original badge did which is a natural default in Western cultures where script flows from left to right.

However, by 1924 the RTC had adopted the black beret in place of the khaki SD cap so the direction of the tank which looked fine on the SD cap on which it was front facing, did not look so good on a beret on which the badge was positioned over the left eye thus making the tank seem to be moving rearwards ie retreating! For the sake of morale this had to change so the design was quickly altered to show the tank boldly advancing!

In the comparison of the three versions it is hard to see but the 1924 badge is slightly smaller overall than the later version which has only changed since with the Queens Crown rather then the Kings Crown (may or may not change again next year?)

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature with no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
