French Flag with Star?

Does anybody know what this is?

*A friend sent me this pic (only one) and I thought at first son in the service.

This may well be a homemade Son In service Banner, the 1 may indicate the family's 1st individual in the military service, and when other family members come of age, they may add stars or numbers to the banner... or it may indicate number of years in the service..

Mr. Jerry over at the USMF forum may be able to add his expertise as he collects homefront banners..
