    I’m hoping someone can help me identify this backpack. I’m posting in this section because I bought it in a flea market in Japan with a group of other IJA equipment a couple of years ago.

    It has no markings on any part. I’m not convinced it’s Japanese or even military but don’t know where else to start. Any input gratefully received.

    At least not of Army specs. Most likely a postwar civilian improvisation for black market shopping. Every man and woman had a large rucksack and canteen for daily survival after the war.

    The IJA eliminated use of any leather from backpacks as early as May 1934, so leather would not be seen on WW2 military packs.

    The mesh pocket is an interesting addition, much like a built-in fruit and veg bag.
    An unusual example of important social history.
