German Feldmutze with Japanese letters? - Help

Hello,

I recently got this hat from a batch of items. This one in particular has attracted a lot of attention because inside there seem to be Asian characters that I can't identify.

A colleague on the forum asked to post here in order to find out something.

Sorry, but I cannot make anything out of it. They do look like smudged Japanese/Chinese characters, but too blurred for me. I did try adjusting the colors and rotating the photo to get four different views; sometimes seeing something right-side-up really makes a difference .... but not this time.
