Default Help to ID PNG canteen

    Hi All,
    This is my first post!
I lived in PNG as a teenager and still have a few things i collected there.
One is this canteen. it has the owners name engraved on it and I've often thought of sending it back to Japan to the owners family - since he surely would not have made it home wearing it.
But IDing him would be hard.
IDing this canteen seems hard - I can't find another one like it anywhere.
I've read through the very informative sticky here "Evolution of the IJA canteen" and I think mine is a pre-war - it has the arrows and hand Nigiriya mark of Japan Light Metals Company.
Does that mean the type of canteen and the type of owner/unit is was issued to is totally random?

    Cheers
    John K

PS - sorry for the images all being around the wrong way. I have a samsung phone and no matter what I do, they always turn 90 deg to where they should be .....

    Welcome.

    What/where is PNG? Penang?

Im sure some of the guys can help ID it

If you download the photos to you PC, do a small edit and save it,and then upload from there, it should take care of the rotation issue.

    Thanks a lot MAP!
And thanks for the fast reply.
Yes, it's from Papua New Guinea.
I don't know exactly where - I'm guessing the Northern coast - Lae, Madang or the islands, Milne Bay or Rabaul.

I will definitely try the upload method. It is apparently a built in Samsung problem.

    Thanks Guy,
    I confirm the same.
Shame there's no given name, but that's all there is, apart from the stamping underneath.

    Hi Type4,
That's what I thought from googling. The screw thread is really a high quality piece.
But it doesn't look like any other officer canteen I've been able to look up.

It is a general cell phone quirk. Doesn't always happen with Androids, but is much more prevalent with iPhones.
