Kure Naval Depot - Dated May 6, 1942
Named to Hayashi Maechu? (weird if not non-existent given name) in a kosakutai—construction/pioneer unit (part of a larger force)
昭和十七年五月六日
Showa 17 [1942] May 6
工作隊
Kōsaku-tai
Kōsaku Unit [battalion/regiment/division, etc]
- Kōsaku would be the commander's surname.
林 前 忠
Hayashi Mae Tada
The name is either:
- Hayashi, Maetada [I cannot find a given name of 前忠 Maetada]
- Hayashimae, Tadashi [I thought the space was too far between 林 前 and that is why I thought the given name was 前忠; however, there IS a surname/placename of 林前 Hayashimae]
Part of the preprinted tag:
呉海.....
Kure Naval... This would be the depot from where the cap was issued.

I'm not sure. The name is weird no matter how I look at it.
It'd be interesting to see the entire item. Kosakutai are usually part of SNLF as well as Special Base Forces and Guard Units. The date roughly coincides with the formation of the Kure 5th SNLF but I don't want to speculate too much.
Yes, let’s see whole item please
Hello Guy and Adachi, thank you for your time and detailed translation its very much appreciated.
Special thanks to Guy you are a legend sir.
In transit will post pics when received. thank you.
Hi guys , here are some photos, not my day for photos lighting was bad.
The helmet came from a WWII veterans family (had my eye on it for quit some time) through auction, some research I had carried out regarding veteran service in WWII (served with the Australian RAAF 34 Squadron) so I'm guessing it could have been picked up through his travels during New Guinea campaign ?
This Imperial Japanese Navy helmet could possibly ? have been part of the Battle of Milne Bay in Aug 1942 , it is marked with Japanese characters on the helmet rim that are similar to the characters on helmet cover , the whole helmet has a nice combat look to it and is a really nice looking piece.
I'm sure someone will translate Japanese characters on helmet rim. Thank you in advance.
Some photos..... unfortunately the naval anchor has all but gone with time.
