Some help to translate the stamp and the ink letters highly appreciated..
The ink stamp says Showa 15 (1940) and the painted character in the back by the bridge is size small

Found the meaning of the Japanese surname "Morita'. It means 'ricefield near the forest'
The surname is mostly found in western Japan and the Ryūkyū Islands.
Not that I will find the identity of the soldier with this information
Great, intact condition. Curious - are the chin strap ties still present down to the end? They are often chewed up. And on a side note - looks like Shemp is now Cousin Basil! Check out Brideless Groom for that reference. Neil
