If you guys want to search for photos of the patch in wear etc, let me just show you how narrow that window of possible wear would have been.

The existence of naval paratroops was announced to the public precisely at 5PM on 15th February 1942 Japan Time. Until then, as Yagyu also said, it was held in the strictest confidence.

Then already 45 days later, Navy Specialist patches were all discontinued because they gave out too much information to possible enemies at one glance.

At the time the patches were all rescinded, official documents also exhaustively illustrated all specialist patch designs in use at that time, and of course none of the fantasy patches were shown there.

Thus even time-frame-wise the fantasy pieces have a pretty solid alibi for not having existed.

We need Tom Cruise to launch a paratrooper patch under such tight conditions, as it is "Mission Impossible".

Bruce, what am I going to do with you? If you don't understand the difference in the approval process for a sword and a single sarute, I won't even try to get through to you any more.

So it was a 45 day window when Tom Cruise provided military intelligence with an illustration of proposed navy paratrooper rating? So, once again how did the fantasy rating design end up on the cover? So much absoluteness it's painful! So many officers beating enlisted men for the slightest modification or deviation from the emporers iron fisted decree! Those poor brave soldiers fighting to the end on those islands afraid to break rules painting camo on their helmets yet most knowing they'd never see their families again. That sarute designer/maker most certainly lost his head. The newly designed ratings with color coded enamel cherry blossoms sure were included in US intelligence manuals awfully quick! So much for famous Japanese secrecy

If the source material is questionable, anything based on it has a serious problem. The important thing here is to make sure the source material is trustworthy. It's not laughing business.

Take a deep breath, Jareth. The MIF can do it. All you need is a late Martin Landau wearing a Hirohito mask and they could do it all in the usual 1 hour, including the commercials.

I have heard there is a watch fob with the crossed parachutes design. I believe it commemorates the airborne operation in the Celebes carried out by the 1st Yokosuka SNLF.

Not to leave any room for doubt and in order to bury the para patch hoax once and for all, I will give you more details on the Cabinet meeting of government ministers, where the decision was made to abolish naval specialist patches.

The proposal from the Minister of the Navy was presented to Prime Minister Tojo on 14th March 1942, requesting Cabinet approval, preceding the Emperor's approval. This means actually that within 30 days of the public announcement admitting the existence of the naval paratroops, an official decision had been reached within the navy Not to continue with the practice of specialty patches altogether.

The Cabinet Meeting was thus held on March 23rd 1942 attended by 13 Ministers. Even though it was strictly a navy matter, anything that had to be further presented to the Emperor required full cabinet approval in advance. At this meeting, also attended by Ministers of Railway, Post and Agriculture, etc, it was always required practice to provide also copies of the old regulation along with the new proposal. The drawings attached below were what was presented to the 13 Ministers as the current patch designs that were now being discontinued. If a para patch had existed, it would have been among the illustrated patches, but it clearly did not exist as of March 23rd.

The new insignia proposal was duly approved by the cabinet and presented to the Emperor for his signature on 30th March 1942, where it was signed as an edict.

This edict was further published in the 31st March 1942 government Gazette, which I showed as post 22.

So, the navy para patch did not exist as of 23rd March and on 30th March, the Emperor himself had forbade further introductions of specialty patches, leaving absolutely no chance for the para patch to be introduced after that date.

At the Cabinet meeting of 23rd March 1942, the government ministers were shown the following illustrations of patch designs that the Navy was now officially discontinuing.

As I always say, it is a minimally required discipline for an author to locate and publish the Edict number and date establishing the item, whether it's a sword or only uniform insignia. If you come up empty-handed in that search, there is a good chance you are about to perpetrate and propagate a hoax about a non-existing fantasy item. Those who have no means to do that unfortunately are not qualified to write about the subject unless they want to make a fool of themselves.

Once again, like I said here, I write what I write for free to show such wannabe authors how to conduct proper research that bring us forward in our knowledge and not indulge in all the contaminating nonsense.

Very important piece of history, Nick, thank you for posting that. So we know for a fact that as of March '42, this was not an authorized patch (and by implication of the order, nor was it ever).

After looking at the existing patches, I can see the themes brought into the patch in question, anchor topped with cherry blossom, crossed items. If the patch was a fake (as oposed to something made for personal reasons like mine) by an Allied trooper, it would take special equipment. I doubt this could have been made in theatre, unless there were uniform repair shops with the needed equipment. It's possible a schemer with connections back home (which did exist) could have had some made up and shipped out to him during the war. Once passed off to unsuspecting buyers, the patches would be in circulation among the troops and by 1945, picked up by MID personell composing the document.

After re-reading the book article in Jareth's post, the author's second patch looks really poorly made, like fakes often do (as oposed to the really well made example owned by Jareth). Well, maybe someday, someone will randomly show up with a piece of evidence that will clear it up, like the guy did with the PX document on the post-war made gunto.

    Thanks again Nick.
