Default Japanese Type 3 IJA Shin Gunto

I've had this sword for many many years. And finally pulled it out to photograph. Sun was extremely bright so a bit difficult.

I bought this pre my forum days as a "Navel Landing Force" sword but have known for years that it is IJA. I think it is a Type 3 ('44 date?)

For the life of me I can NOT remove the mekugi. Maybe I need to pound a bit harder but am reluctant to do so. Any tips? Or Thoughts?

Overall it is in great shape however I am seeing some wear at the tip. Should I store it outside it scabbard?

Can anyone tell me what the Kanji says?

Double clicking the photos will enlarge for much more detail.

    Enjoy.

    Michael

    Michael,
Great looking Type 3 shingunto. You are correct, this is an IJA gunto, much debate as to "late war" style. The wear shouldn't be from the saya as the wooden liner inside wouldn't cause damage. You are most likely seeing actual damage from the war.

There is no reason the mekugi shouldn't come out. It's a straight peg through a straight hole. I'd take a metal punch and hammer and give it a convincing whack! Looking forward to seeing the date and smith!

    Thanks!

I'll try again ....just nervous to be honest that I can't put it back together. It's a tight fit. Haven't had this issue with my other Murmachi era katana. Just this one.

I assumed that this a non traditional made blade so wasn't expecting to find much.

Last one of these I had never bothered to remove the handle as it was a factory made blade so there was not much to learn.

Thanks Bob. My thoughts too. Wasn't expecting to find anything. But if it came out easy I would have removed.

Arsenal number? I don't recall seeing numbers on a saya before.

Yes. I have not seen it either. Especially for an officers sword as these were not stored in racks like rifles.

    Beautiful sword Michael!

I wouldn't risk any damage trying to remove the peg.

See the pinned thread above on the "type 3" sword.

    Regards

    Russ
