The gold might have worn off. The reverse states 戦傷 "WIA"

    戦傷
    Senshō
Wounded in Action [lit. battle injury]

    公傷
    Kōshō
    Occupational Injury [lit. public injury]

And on the reverse? Both have
    戦傷
    Senshō
Wounded in Action [lit. battle injury]

    ??

If so, the gold wash faded.

Confusing, because the WIA has a gold-colored center and arrowheads, whereas the Illness/sickness badge is silver-colored in those areas.

Rich Catalano states he's seen the WIA badge in silver:

he Type II badges came in one class with two versions: senshou (wounded in battle) and
koushou (wounded in the public service, but most often given when a soldier contracted a
disease like malaria). The version is shown by the center kanji on the reverse. In addition,
the senshou badge is gold gilt while the koushou is silver. However, I have seen some
    senshou badges in silver

As usual, there is a kanji that I cannot clearly make out! As far as I can tell:

    pencil:
    陸軍兵長入*伊太郎
    Rikugun Heichō Iri* Itarō
    Army Lance Corporal Iri~ Itaro
Surname is something like 入屋 [Iriya] ... but that's not 屋

    Box top:
    昭和十六年五月三日
    Showa 16 [1941] May 3

下村 Shimomura [probably the town of Shimomura]

    水谷秀隆︀
    Mizutani Hidetaka
