Yep, another one... This one I purchased due to it being a clean example of late model with the thick pages. Interestingly, there are two documents in the pocket that appear to be more interesting than the book's contents. One is I think is a draft call up, the other I have no clue. Anybody able to help? Thanks in advance!!!

Nice work Guy! I think maybe it's Tobu Dai 7858 Butai
    6th pic down:

(Tobu) 東部7858 = 58th Specially Established Garrison Battalion, (芝隊長) "Shiba" Unit Commander

芝 can be family names: Shibasaki, Shibataka, Ishiba, Ishishiba, Hashiba, etc.

Thanks guys! So I'm guessing that the 58th was an ad-hoc unit for the defense of the mainland?

These were coastal defense and bombing damage patch-up battalions composed of part-time soldiers.
The Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April 1942 caused the army to review its national defense plans, but they soon realized that forming permanent garrisons in defense against air raids and mass landings would take away too much man power from war production industries. So they devised a call-up system that called together local vets and reservists in case there were needs for reconstruction after air raids or coastal defense.

Then in 1943 May, the Northern island of Hokkaido was exposed to a barrage of fire from a submarine off the coast, and this incident caused 37 Special Garrison Battalions and 55 Special Garrison Companies to be set up within Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Yours was one of these units.

Such units had minimal permanent staff, and the rest got called in from the local reservist pool as needed.

The easiest way to explain the nature of such a 特設警備大隊 is to say they were units called up like "movie extras".

I think, because of the temporary nature of their military service, instead of making time-consuming entries into the booklets, they were simply given slips of paper like the one shown above that attests to the owner having served in the unit during a certain period.
