No bites yet! Could this be post war???
Cheers,
Tony
The tag inside confirms it is postwar. I don't recognize the insignia.
Here’s another post war field cap with same anchor https://www.baystatemilitaria.com/WWII/DSCN4040w.JPG
Hi Jareth, interesting re the anchor, although that one doesn't have the winged bird.
Cheers,
Tony
Tony, the insignia on the cap you posted is made up of two components. The embroidery and then the metal anchor which in my opinion is identical to the one I showed
Looks like the Maritime Security Guard formed in 1952 within the Japanese Coast Guard, which later evolved into the maritime self-defense force.
The coast guard had a compass within the eagle-topped roundel, but the security guards featured an anchor instead.
Thanks Nick, that's nailed it then. Will inform the owner. Probably not such a common item if the Maritime Self-Defense Force adopted their current badge on formation in 1954, and a bit of Japanese military history.
Cheers,
Tony
