Well, to start off, his name was Takahashi Sokichi and he was from a Samurai family; his rank was corporal. This is the first samurai class techō that I've seen -- but I have no real exposure to techō; perhaps they are more common than I think (but to enlisted/junior NCO?).
高橋昌吉
Takahashi Sokichi
滋賀県士族
Shiga ken shizoku
Shiga Prefecture, Samurai Family
Right above his rank it shows his branch as 砲兵 artillery. That stumped me because it looked like these two kanji 石 言 (with a wide space between) ... but that is written gyōshō grass writing:
上等兵
Jōtōhei [Superior Private/lined out] ... most enlisted did not start off at this rank, right??
伍長
Gochō [Corporal]
He was born on 4 March, Meiji 15 [1882]
The latest date I see is Taishō 8 [1919]
Cheers,
