Any thoughts on this Senninbari, described with cover, as being original or a fake? If original, is it something of a rare type? Full description that is given as follows: "Hand painted silk talisman with cover. The outer cover has Buunchoukyu written in blue with Hamamatsu Hachimangu Temple stamp and the Tokugawa Clan Kamon which was a powerful daimyou during the Edo period. The first inner layer has a hand painted tiger. The second layer within the tiger belt contains what is the traditional 1000 stitches. Also written in Japanese is Pray Continued Luck In The Fortunes Of War. Samuhara is a good luck charm for bullet proof. The Sennibari stitch cloth is made of firn cotton. Two coins are attached on the inside, a 5 sen and a 10 sen. Some Omamori of shrine and grain of rice wrapped by washi paper are inside the talisman bag. These were given as an amulet by women to soldiers going to war as a part of the Shinto culture of Imperial Japan."

    The shrine stamp:
    浜松八幡宮
    Hamamatsu Hachiman−gū
    Located in Shizuoka, Hamamatsu City.

Hachiman is often called in English the "God of War" .... but he was actually the "patron saint" of warriors.

Here's a copy of Miyamoto Musashi's "Hachiman" that I had made in 1985:

Thank you for your feedback. Do you feel that it is original WWII vintage and not a post war fake? The purple slogan and highly colored tiger are throwing me off. And can two separate pieces be part of one Senninbari?

It is a fantastic piece of artwork, and done by someone with a great deal of artistic talent. I think it is an original piece in exceptional condition, unless there is something glaringly obvious with the characters and stamps, but Guy would have noticed that and said so!!

I'm no expert, but it looks period to me. I forgot to explain that one of the slogans is the cryptic "Sa-Mu-Ha-Ra" prayer.
