Special Naval Landing Forces Canteens - cap question
I have seen two distinct screw caps on the standard Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces Canteens: one type is painted black, with a black chain; while the other is a (higher quality?) unpainted metal cap, and an unpainted chain. Is one earlier than the other, or is this simply a manufacturing difference? Can anyone recommend a good source (online or book) that discusses in detail the differences between the various Japanese canteens (SNLF and Army)? Many thanks, friends. John

Re: Special Naval Landing Forces Canteens - cap question
I have received an answer to my question, that I am posting on this thread. Gary Nila has kindly responded to an email, indicating that the black painted caps are a late war (1944) variation. The early canteens had an unpainted anodized aluminum cap. His Osprey book on the SNLF apparently shows eight variations of SNLF canteens. I've ordered a copy! Thanks, Gary.
