    Navy 87th Guards

The 87th Naval Guard Guard, which guards the Buka area on Bougainville Island, one of the Solomon Islands, was the keystone of the Rabaul defense operation.

In March 1945, the Japanese army occupied Bougainville Island, but soon a fierce battle with the US-Moat Allied Forces began.

On May 5, 1945, Colonel Kato was officially appointed as the commander of the 87th Guards.

At this time, the wife's third son was in her womb, but he was never seen alive.

The original number of members was 800. Later, quasi-combatants such as army units, military personnel, and base construction personnel joined, and at the end of the war there were 8,000 members.

    It was increasing.

Approximately 4,000 members of the Navy's 87th Guards died from war diseases. There are no accurate records of the number of POWs who died in the camp, but there are several hundred people.

    Seem.

On February 15, 1945, the remaining members boarded the hospital ship Hikawa Maru and withdrew to the mainland.

    B class war criminal suspect

    cause of action

Around May 1945, an order was issued to shoot six people near Buka Island and Petatu Island on the grounds that they were at risk of fleeing.

(BC class war criminal, Horgun Rabaul trial materials) .

    *

The treatment of guerrillas, spies, etc. during hostilities is part of the war for both sides, and it is difficult to determine whether or not it is a crime.

Furthermore, it was the duty of those in charge of the battle to dispose of enemy islanders.

In a corner of the camp, Colonel Kato was asked by Lieutenant Colonel Hori, ``Did you hold a trial for killing the islanders?'' Colonel Kato replied, `` There was no trial.

I went on my orders. Even if something happens in my absence, I take full responsibility, and my subordinates bear no responsibility whatsoever.' '

    I've said it all.

``A low-level perpetrator who acted under orders cannot be considered a war criminal. The responsibility rests with the commander who gave the order.'' This attitude was later adopted.

Nothing changed in the Rabaul trial. Colonel Kato had no hope of returning to Japan alive.

End of writing (July 31, 1945)

    Dear A Compound,

While I was in the temple for a short period of time, I experienced various troubles, but with your grace, I will be able to go to heaven without any regrets.

I wish you all a reduced sentence and good luck. Goodbye.

    Matsue (wife)

It's caused a lot of trouble
