    Default Type 100 Mortar Round

A relative passed away recently, and her deceased husband had served with the U.S. Army in the south Pacific during World War II. She had told me that her husband brought home a rifle and a Japanese bomb. After she died, another relative went through her closet, found the rifle, and called the police to take it away. The police officer told them it was a Japanese bolt-action rifle. I have now found the "bomb" and after some research it seems to be a Type 100 HE mortar round.

My relative said that there were no explosives in it; her husband always planned to make it into a lamp but never did. I want to confirm that it isn't dangerous, but I'd like to get advice on how to do that safely. (It's hard to imagine that her husband brought a live round all the way to New York 73 years ago, but...) Does the top gold part or red part just screw off? Thanks for any advice.

Are you able to screw the fuse off? Also, if you turn it upside down, it should be hollow. I have one that is deactivated. It's somewhere....LoL. I think you can shine a light and look inside below the fins.

Best wait for others for confirmation.

Edit: yes, I just checked mine. if you look underneath, if it is deactivated, you should be able to see all the way up to the fuse. If you can't a see with a light. Just take a long dowel. It should travel up to the base of the fuse (indicating it is hollow)

btw...it's a nice example. Great writing on it.

The rifle would have been an Arisaka. Most likely a type 99 or 38, and maybe a type 44. Too bad the police took it. It will now be melted down or in some officers home
