I'm just spit balling here, but could it have been a bento box furoshiki?
Maybe repainted then turned into a flag?
I could be wrong, but that was the first thing that came to mind when I saw it.

Looks to be a precisely printed flag to me. Perhaps these patterned silk flags were available to those who had a little more money? Very nice piece!

You also see this sort of silk used on "Going to War" banners. Probably Kimono silk either reused during a time of shortages, or off-cuts of such left over from the making.
