In the Phillipines after the 4th Air Army ceased to exist the remaining mechanics, some of whom were skilled metal workers, turned their hands to making grenades, grenade launchers and other munitions in anticipation of the American landing on Luzon.

Just a thought but really depends on where the grenades were dug up as to their being field made or not.

The grenade is probably Chinese and not Japanese. Only the Type Year 10 十年式曳火手榴彈 and Type 91 九一式曳火手榴彈 had boosters but they have a serrated outer grenade body. The Japanese Type 97 九七式手投榴彈 and Type 99 九九式手榴彈(甲) did not have boosters and could not be used in grenade dischargers 擲彈筒. This grenade could be the one used in the Chinese Type 27 Grenade Discharger 二七式擲彈筒. Hopefully, someone familiar with Chinese small arms will come along and provide additional information.

Hello again, we have exchanged messages last year regarding ordnance. I also believe those to be Chinese nationalist copies of Japanese grenades. Probably for the Type 27 Chinese 50mm mortar. I have very little reference on Chinese wwii ordnance and ammunition. I am interested in those relic Chinese grenades if you decide to sell them. Please keep me in mind. Jim

Here are a few pictures of the T27 launcher and a few grenades in a Chinese museum.

If those relic grenades are for sale i might be interested.
