K98 E.PACK & S Bayonet KM
Hello Members,
I've been looking online for the past few years for a nice K98 Bayonet. Most are overpriced or in bad shape. I like the version with the bakelite grips. To me it gives it some extra esthetic compared to the wooden grip variants. But today a friend of mine that has an antique shop in my local town sold me one for a fair price. To give you an idea it was more in the price range of a none matching number set K98 in worn condition. I gave it a quick look and took it home. My knowledge on these is still very slim and would please like some additional information on it.
It has the waffenambt markings on it with i think the number "253". These are marked on the top side of the handle near the button and on the bottom knob from the scabbard. The bayonet and scabbard are both marked "6425 e". Now there is also an additional marking that i have not seen before. Above the maker mark and on the scabbard is the marking: "N11398K". A quick look on the web shows it might be Kriegsmarine.. But most are marked differently from what i have seen.
The blade has not been sharpened and the blueing is still present. The frog has seen some better days and seems very dry. The bayonet does not have any rust pitting. There is some minor pitting present on the scabbard.
Any opinions, information or questions are appreciated.
I can make some extra photos if necessary!
Best regards,
Dos

My only concern would be the blueing on this blade. It has some wear marks from being in and from pulling out of the scabbard. Is there any way to tell if it was reaplied post war?

Hello,
does the scabbard have the same unitmarking?
The stamp on the bayonet is in any case the original North Sea station of the Kriegsmarine.
The frog doesn't go with it. This is the model for the air force.

Hello Sleepwalker,
Yes the same marking "N11398K" is on the opposite side of the scabbard where the "6425 e" is marked.
Very cool information that you can track it down to the North Sea station of the Kriegsmarine! I will look further into this.
To bad the frog is not a kriegsmarine model. I did not know there were differences between these.. It does hold the same condition as the bayonet and scabbard itself. Maybe it was replaced with what was available late war? I will still look for a Kriegsmarine frog to make it complete...
I forgot to mention that the "Spine" of the blade has the marking "37". Is this the date of manufacture?
Thanks man, Much appreciated!

Very nice! Now i got some reference photos to work with in finding my frog that i need to make this a complete matching piece. I will probably pay more for the KM frog from a quick look on the dealer websites then what i have payed for the actual bayonet..haha. Thanks!
I have made some additional photos of the markings and the blade. My doubts about the blueing are gone imo with further inspection. It seems the wear corresponds to condition of the rest of the bayonet.

Nice acquisition, one year later and it probably would have had the black Bakelite grips. As for naval frogs they can be (IMO) a minefield. Having seen fakes and fake Naval metal stamps that were made to fool collectors. For myself (fortunately) I was often lucky enough to often find the frogs with the bayonets still attached and developed my own sense of good from bad. Not that the frogs themselves are that common because they were not as durable over time as the bayonets themselves. Something that was assisted by a very dedicated primarily firearms focused Naval specialist collector that really helped me. Best Regards, Fred

Thank you Fred, really happy with it! I will make sure to post any frogs i come across on my search thru dealers or markets here on the forum first. I can imagine many Luftwaffe or Wehrmacht frogs are marked with authentic or fake stamps of the Kriegsmarine to enhance the price of sale.
